DOSE 1 of Purple Mindful Mode - Auto-pilot Vs Conscious Choice

Prince once said “imagine what I would do if I could do all I can”. He always felt he had even more in him and was able to not limit himself. 

39 hit albums, constantly in the UK Top 40 since 1983, in the days of vinyl when it was said a lot of Prince’s B sides were better than most A sides. 

Touring frequently, producing and writing for other artists and recording hundreds more unreleased albums. Each and every thing he did showed stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures and genres. 

Ok, so he wasn’t doing his own cooking and cleaning but even so, how did he have time for all that quality and quantity of creativity?

He checked himself: 

I used to be involved with every aspect of every on stage. I’m way more relaxed now. It feels like anything can happen.

He was functioning in mindful mode 1: conscious choice rather than auto-pilot. 

He wasn’t losing time by pointlessly running through the same old habits of thinking or doing that have stopped serving any useful purpose. He wasn’t striving too long for goals he was wiser letting go off.

Mindfulness reminds us we have ‘doing’ and ‘being’ mind modes. Doing mode is brilliant at automating our life by habit forming. 

The downside comes when we cede too much control to our auto pilot, while thinking, working, eating, walking, or driving without clear awareness of what we’re doing. This is where we lose time and miss much of life. 

A mindful ‘being’ mode allows you to ‘check in’ with yourself so you can make intentional choices. When you become more mindful you bring intention and action into alignment, instead of being constantly side-tracked by our auto-pilot.  

With practice, you become fully alive and aware again. 

Of course, that’s all easier said than done.  It helps to bring the body into the show to support our naturally wondering mind in the mindful zone, and this is what yoga is actually all about - not simply body beautiful acrobatics on the mat.
